BOSTONDue to icy conditions, three of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) First Day Hikes have been cancelled for the safety of residents and participants. The agency urges all participants to contact the parks listed below and check the DCR Twitter page @MassDCR before attending a guided hike for the most up to date information. Visitors attending a hike that is proceeding as planned should wear appropriate foot wear for the conditions and bring hats, gloves, scarves, other necessary outdoor apparel and water.

Across Massachusetts, visitors to the state parks system will find opportunities to experience unique and cultural treasures that are close to home. From walking a historic canal to traversing through a forest, visitors will find themselves surrounded by the enchanting natural landscapes contained within the Commonwealth. In Massachusetts, DCR staff will lead the hikes in ten locations, which average one to two miles or longer depending on location. Details about the hikes, difficulty, length, terrain, and tips regarding proper clothing are listed on DCR’s website. Hikers are also encouraged to tweet, post, and tag photos on social media using @MassDCR and #FirstDayHikes.

In addition, three DCR ice rinks within the City of Boston will hold free public skating hours on New Year’s Day. Participating locations include Kelly Outdoor Rink in Jamaica Plain, Murphy Memorial Rink in South Boston, and Steriti Rink in the North End. Public ice skating times and locations of DCR managed rinks can be found on the agency’s webpage, as well as a full list of all DCR owned rinks. Skaters are also encouraged to share experiences on social media using @MassDCR and #FirstDaySkate.
