BOSTONThe Baker-Polito Administration has announced that the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will renovate the locker rooms and concession area at the Bajko Memorial Rink in the City of Boston. The improvement projects, which are expected to begin in March 2019, comes after last year’s installation of a new refrigeration system, making a total investment of $3.6 million to the ice rink facility.

“The Bajko Memorial Rink is a popular year round recreational facility offering visitors a safe spot to ice skate in the winter and swim in the summer months,” said Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Leo Roy. “The Baker-Polito Administration is thrilled to be investing in the future of the Bajko Memorial Rink for the residents of Boston and surrounding communities.”

The project includes the construction of six new locker rooms outfitted with bathrooms and showers, a concession area, a redesigned entrance area, and enhanced ADA improvements. The new concession area has been designed to serve the outdoor swimming pool with a new roll-up exterior window, which will allow concession service to visitors externally rather than entering the facility. The work is expected to be completed by November of 2019 in time for the start of hockey season.

“The Bajko Rink is a staple in the Hyde Park community, bringing hockey players, families and residents to the recreational center year round,” said State Senator Mike Rush (D-Boston). “I look forward to seeing the continued improvements to the facility, providing adequate updates to serve the needs of the community.”

“We are pleased beyond measure that the updates to the Bajko Memorial Rink will come to fruition for next year’s winter skating season. We thank the Administration for expediting the process,” said State Representative Angelo M. Scaccia (D-Boston).

“Hyde Park Youth Hockey has been a staple of the community for years on end and a tremendous partner in the upkeep of Bajko Rink,” said Boston City Councilor Tim McCarthy (D-5). “I want to thank the Baker-Polito Administration and the DCR for their investment in the rink and their commitment to improving recreational opportunities for Hyde Park.”

In 2016, DCR began planning the renovation of Bajko Memorial Rink. The rink has not seen improvement work since the early 1990’s. With the increase of youth and women’s hockey programs in the Hyde Park area, the current conditions at Bajko Memorial Rink have become inadequate to meet the needs of the community. Additionally, the existing team rooms lack bathrooms or showers. The improvements of the Bajko Memorial Rink will expand access and opportunities for the facility’s users.
