This month marks the 250th anniversary of the first meeting of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. The displayed broadside was issued after a meeting held in Cambridge on October 26, 1774, where a call was made to form militias. The convening of the Provincial Congress was a pivotal moment in Revolutionary history, as colonists established their own governing structure in response to escalating frustrations with the King and British Parliament. Visit us through October 29 to see the broadside on display in our reading room and read more in this week’s blog post.
“In Provincial Congress, Cambridge, October 26, 1774: whereas in consequence of the present unhappy disputes between Great-Britain and the colonies, a formidable body of troops with warlike preparations of every sort are already arrived at, and others destined for the metropolis of this province ... it is resolved, and hereby recommended to the several companies of militia ... that they meet forthwith”
