Standing Order for Dispensing Over-the-Counter (OTC) Diagnostic Tests for SARS-CoV-2

This Standing Order is issued by the Department of Public Health pursuant to G.L. c. 94C, §19E.

This Standing Order authorizes licensed pharmacists to dispense over-the-counter (OTC) diagnostic SARS-CoV-2 tests to any individual. This Standing Order applies to OTC diagnostic SARS-CoV-2 tests approved or authorized via emergency use authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In addition, to facilitate insurance coverage for these FDA approved or authorized OTC diagnostic tests for SARS-CoV-2, this Standing Order authorizes licensed pharmacists to treat this Standing Order as a prescription for any such test. The pharmacy must make best efforts to determine if the purchaser's insurance covers the selected test and assist the purchaser to identify a test that is covered by the purchaser's insurance, if any.

Any OTC diagnostic SARS-CoV-2 test dispensed pursuant to this Standing Order must be dispensed in accordance with the procedures and protocols included in that test's package insert.
