The Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration (DER) is seeking applications from Massachusetts municipalities for dam removal preliminary design studies. These studies, funded and managed by DER, will provide the agency with critical information for future ecological restoration planning and climate adaptation. Likewise, the studies help landowners and partners assess risks and opportunities during early planning phases of potential dam removal. DER will contract engineering firms to conduct a reconnaissance study and develop preliminary designs and cost estimates for removal for five selected dams. Projects will be rated based on potential environmental and community benefits resulting from removal, as well as proximity and potential benefits to Environmental Justice communities.

Please be advised that only municipalities are eligible to apply. Any dam owners who are not a municipality can work with their municipality to submit a project. Applications are due by August 11, 2023. More information, including the application form, is available on COMMBUYS.
