BOSTONToday, Governor Charlie Baker nominated Attorney Patrick J. Malone of Leominster to the position of Associate Justice of the Fitchburg District Court. Attorney Malone has 24 years of legal experience in the public and private sectors.

“Attorney Malone’s valuable experience as Clerk Magistrate of this Court has well prepared him for the position of Associate Justice,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “I am pleased to submit his name to the Governor’s Council for their advice and consent.” 

“Attorney Malone has developed important skills in a variety of legal fields over the course of his 24 year career that will serve the Court well,” said Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito. “I am confident that Attorney Malone will serve all parties before him with fairness, if confirmed.”

The District Court hears a wide range of criminal, civil, housing, juvenile, mental health, and other types of cases. District Court criminal jurisdiction extends to all felonies punishable by a sentence up to five years, and many other specific felonies with greater potential penalties; all misdemeanors; and all violations of city and town ordinances and by-laws. The District Court is located in 62 courts across the Commonwealth.

Judicial nominations are subject to the advice and consent of the Governor’s Council. Applicants for judicial openings are reviewed by the Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC) and recommended to the governor. Governor Baker established the JNC in February 2015 pursuant to Executive Order 558, a non-partisan, non-political Commission composed of volunteers from a cross-section of the Commonwealth's diverse population to screen judicial applications. Twenty-one members were later appointed to the JNC in April 2015.

About Patrick J. Malone:

Patrick J. Malone, has been an Attorney in Massachusetts since 1994. Attorney Malone began his legal career as an Associate at the Roncone Law Offices in Leominster before practicing at the Westford firm of Holmes and Poitras, PC, and ultimately becoming a Partner at the Leominster firm, Gazourian and Malone. During this time, Attorney Malone practiced civil and criminal law in the District Court, which included serving as a Special Prosecutor in the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. He has served as Clerk Magistrate of the Fitchburg District Court since 2010 and was later named Acting Clerk Magistrate of the Westborough District Court where he has worked since 2018. Malone also has extensive experience in the private sector as a Global Contracts Negotiator for Hewlett-Packard Company in Andover. Attorney Malone has participated on a number of committees in both legal and local communities including the Massachusetts Trial Court Process Steering Committee, Clerk/Probation Task Force on MassCourts and the Leominster Education Foundation. More recently, Attorney Malone has served as an Adjunct Professor at both Assumption College and Fitchburg State University. Malone is a 1985 graduate of the United States Army Military Police Academy and a veteran of the Massachusetts Army National Guard. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Fitchburg State College in 1989 and his Juris Doctor from Massachusetts School of Law in 1994.
