Media Contact for Massachusetts Division of Insurance to Hold Information Sessions on Contraceptive Coverage
Boston — Today, the Division of Insurance (Division) announced a series of information sessions to be held this month to allow interested parties to engage with the Division regarding mandated coverage for certain contraceptive benefits in Massachusetts.
In accordance with state law, licensed health insurance carriers offering fully funded health plans in Massachusetts are required to cover at least one type of federally approved contraceptive drug, device, or other product as listed in the federal Birth Control Guide without any cost sharing. A lesser known benefit under the law also requires health insurance carriers to allow members to obtain up to a 12-month supply of a covered prescription contraceptive at the time that the prescription is dispensed.
“The Division of Insurance remains committed to ensuring that health plan coverage is consistent with state laws,” said Division of Insurance Commissioner Gary Anderson. “These listening sessions will assist the Division in developing further guidance to ensure that not only insurance carriers, but also health care providers, pharmacists and consumers, understand women’s contraceptive rights in Massachusetts.”
In order to increase awareness of the availability of this benefit, the Division previously hosted webinars to better inform hospital and medical providers as well as licensed pharmacists. Those presentations are available for viewing online: https://www.youtube.com/user/massconsumer/videos
The Division has planned the following information sessions:
Friday, October 15 at 1:00 PM
Friday, October 29 at 1:00 PM
Friday, November 12 at 1:00 PM (if needed)
