BostonThe Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced today that Registrar of Motor Vehicles Erin Deveney will host the annual low number license plate lottery on Thursday, September 6, beginning at 8:00 p.m., on WBZ AM 1030.

All available low number plates will be drawn Thursday night and lottery applicants and low-number plate enthusiasts can listen to the drawing by tuning in to AM 1030 or by visiting the station website at www.wbz1030.com.

This year, 11,477 low number plate lottery applications have been submitted for 201 eligible plates.  In 2017, the Registry received over 11,000 applications for 162 plates.

Some of this year’s low plate characters are 1400, 2558, 4J, Y4, 55Z, 77V, and Z81.

Entries for the 2018 lottery had to be mailed or postmarked by August 28, 2018, to be eligible for the drawing. While there was no cost to apply to the lottery, if an applicant is selected as a winner, there is a fee to receive the license plate and there is a standard registration fee.

Low number plates must be renewed every two years.

The names of all low number license plate winners are anticipated to be posted on the Registry’s website www.mass.gov/rmv  by close of business on Friday, September 7.  In addition, each successful applicant will receive a letter from the Registry that includes instructions on how to register the new low number plate.

The Registry issues and oversees all license, ID, and motor vehicle registrations in the Commonwealth.  As directed under state statute, the low number plate lottery is held annually and requires that winners must be announced each year by September 15.

The RMV is committed to providing efficient, reliable, and professional customer service. The RMV recommends that customers “Start Online First” to review the 40 transactions and services that are available online before visiting a service center. In addition, many RMV transactions can be done at a AAA Northeast customer location for AAA members.
