BostonTwo individuals have been indicted in connection with trafficking fentanyl in Lawrence, Attorney General Maura Healey announced today.

Luis Baez, age 25, and Luis Rodriguez, age 27, both of Lawrence, were indicted by an Essex County Grand Jury Wednesday on two count each of Trafficking Fentanyl and Conspiracy to Violate the Controlled Substances Act.

The charges are the result of a joint investigation with the Massachusetts State Police Commonwealth Interstate Narcotics Reduction Enforcement Team, the Lawrence Police Department’s Street Narcotic Unit, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).

Authorities arrested Baez and Rodriguez in August in Lawrence.

In July 2017, authorities began an investigation into an alleged drug trafficking operation they believed was distributing heroin and fentanyl in Lawrence. Authorities allege that Baez and Rodriguez participated in the sale of approximately 150 grams of fentanyl.

These charges are allegations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Lynn Brennan, of AG Healey’s Enterprise, Major and Cyber Crimes Division. The case was investigated by the Massachusetts State Police Commonwealth Interstate Narcotics Reduction Enforcement Team, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Lawrence Police Department.
