As of October 1, RMV inspection stations will continue to check vehicles for the same items as previous to October 1, but for the first time, still photographs will be taken as part of the inspection. Photographs will be taken of the VIN number, the front license plate, the back license plate, the odometer and of the inspector doing the inspection. The cameras are part of the new, five-year Auto Emissions and Safety Inspection Program which will allow the Commonwealth to uphold the Baker-Polito Administration’s commitment to clean air and public safety.

Public inspection stations will replace their equipment with new, more efficient equipment and will begin using the equipment on October 1. The updated equipment and software will help increase inspection quality and deter inspection fraud.

Consumers and vehicle inspections will not be impacted by the new emissions and safety inspection program and the cost of inspections will remain at $35. The safety and emissions inspection requirements are not changing, so inspectors will continue performing inspections based on current standards.
