About the Shrewsbury Route 20 Corridor Study

The Route 20 master plan outlines improvements to address existing and future safety and operational deficiencies faced by all users of the corridor, including bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists, while supporting future economic development.

Route 20

The Route 20 corridor study area extends for 4.6 miles in the Town of Shrewsbury, from the Worcester / Shrewsbury line in the west to the Shrewsbury / Northborough line in the east.  The roadway currently carries between 20,000 and 25,000 vehicles per day and carries approximately five percent trucks. In addition, there are many planned and potential developments in the vicinity of Route 20 that will increase the number of vehicles using the roadway daily.

There are safety concerns at several locations along the corridor, including three intersections that are classified as high crash locations: Route 20 at Lake Street, Route 20 at Grafton Street, Route 20 at Walnut Street.

The Master Plan

MassDOT with the assistance of the Town of Shrewsbury developed this corridor master plan to help guide future transportation-related improvements to address congestion and safety.

The Route 20 master plan includes:

  • Two travel lanes in each direction on Route 20
  • Facilities on Route 20 for bicyclists and pedestrians
  • Safety improvements at high crash locations
  • Upgrades to existing traffic signal equipment and provide additional turning lanes as needed at existing signalized intersections

MassDOT and the Town have held a number of public informational meetings during 2019 to solicit public feedback on the Route 20 corridor. The final master plan finalized and presented to the public in March of 2020.
