Child care financial assistance eligibility

You can apply for financial assistance through the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) if you and your family meet the income and activity requirements. Your eligibility is reassessed every year.

Income requirement

Your household income must be at or below 50% of the state median income (SMI) when you are first considered for funding. Use the SMI Income Eligibility chart to see if you meet the criteria.

If you or your child has a documented disability or special need, your household income must be at or below 85% of the SMI when you are first considered.

Activity requirement

The activity requirement is also called the service requirement. To meet this requirement, you must:

  • Be working, seeking employment, or enrolled in an education or training program (not including graduate, law, or medical school) for at least 20 hours per week for part-time care, and at least 30 hours per week for full-time care.
  • Be retired and older than 65.
  • Have a diagnosed and documented disability or special need, or have a child with a diagnosed and documented disability or special need.

You can only fulfill the activity requirement with a disability or special need for 2 years. After this time, you will need to fulfill the requirement either by working, seeking employment, or enrolled in an education or training program (requirement 1) or being retired and older than 65 (requirement 2).
