Clerk Joseph Stanton

Appointed 2009

The Justices of the Appeals Court appointed Joseph Stanton as Clerk on November 2, 2009. Prior to his appointment, he served as an Assistant Clerk of the Appeals Court for approximately ten years. Prior to joining the Appeals Court, Joseph served as a Law Clerk and the Chief Law Clerk of the Massachusetts Superior Court (1994-1996), a Staff Attorney at the Supreme Judicial Court (1996-1997), and a litigation associate at the Boston law firm of Sloane and Walsh, LLP (1997-1999).  

He serves as a member of several Supreme Judicial Court and Trial Court committees, including the committees on the rules of civil and appellate procedure, the rules of criminal procedure, electronic filing, impoundment procedure, and public access to court records. He is the reporter to the Supreme Judicial Court advisory committee on Massachusetts evidence law, which issues the annual Massachusetts Guide to Evidence. He is an Adjunct Professor of legal writing at the New England School of Law.  

Joseph frequently speaks and writes about appellate practice and procedure. He is a graduate of Boston College and the New England School of Law, where he was editor-in-chief of the New England Law Review.
