Re: School Closure Update - Teachout Opportunities

Please refer to Bulletin #1 and Bulletin #2, posted by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (Department) regarding the closure of ComputerTraining.edu (CT) before proceeding.

The Department emailed each student affected by the school's closure as to whether they were eligible to either file a Claim for Restitution with the Department or participate in a teachout. If you did not receive an email, or have questions about these options, please contact us immediately at Occupational.Schools@state.ma.us.

As stated in Bulletin #2, if you were unable to complete your course of study due to the school's closure, and if you were unable to have your debt cancelled using one of the remedies provided in Bulletin #1, and if you choose to participate in a teachout, then you may be eligible to participate in a teachout at one of the Department-approved institutions listed below and any subsequent institutions approved by the Department. If you answer "yes" to each of the statements below, please contact a teachout institution to discuss your options:

  • I was unable to complete my course of study at CT due to the school's closure.
  • I was unable to have my debt cancelled using one of the remedies provided in Bulletin #1.
  • I am choosing to participate in a teachout rather than filing a Claim for Restitution with the Department.

Coursework:
Since there were three separate courses interrupted by the school's closure, teach out options will differ as a result of the amount of coursework you completed. The school will make every effort to assist you in completing the courses for which you contracted with CT. Any additional courses in which you would like to enroll will be at your own expense.

Expenses:
If you paid CT for the full cost of your program, you will not incur any additional expenses. However, if you only paid for a portion of your program, or your lender did not disburse all funds from your loan to CT, then the balance of the funds due CT are owed to the school providing the teachout. The teachout institution will work with students to make arrangements for second loan disbursement to go directly to the teachout institution. If you are unsure whether the second portion of your student loan was disbursed to CT, please contact your lender, or check your account via the lender's website.

Enrollment and Teachout Contracts:
If you opt to participate in a teachout, you must to sign both an enrollment contract and a teachout agreement with the institution no later than March 1, 2010 and to complete the teachout no later than 120 days after executing the agreement. Both documents have been approved by the Department and the terms of the teachout will be set forth on these documents. The Department will work with the teachout institutions to provide them with information regarding the status of your coursework and financing with the closed school.

Deadline: March 1, 2010
Any student that has not had his/her debt cancelled using one of the remedies provided in Bulletin #1, must either execute a teachout agreement or file a Claim for Restitution no later than March 1, 2010.

Questions:
The Department greatly appreciates your help in keeping the volume of phone calls it receives to a minimum by checking these Bulletins. If you have specific questions about the teachout or claim options, please email us.

For those filing Claims, please be advised that it is not unusual for the claims process to take a year or more, and if the school files for bankruptcy, it could take significantly longer. Information on our website will be updated when, and only when, there is new information available. If there is no new information for a period of time, this simply means that that stage of the claims process is not yet complete. We cannot respond to general calls or emails requesting status updates.

We thank you for your help and patience in this matter.
