Duplicate titles

If the original title has been lost, stolen, or damaged, you may apply for a duplicate title.

What to know

If you’re eligible to order a duplicate title online, the title will be processed and mailed to the owner’s address as listed on the RMV's database. The title will be printed and mailed within 7-10 business days after the transaction. Duplicate title online transactions cannot be processed if the vehicle has a lien-holder listed. Only the vehicle owner (individual or business) may apply for a duplicate title online.

If you have a change of address, you must wait until you receive confirmation from the Registry that your address change has been completed successfully before you attempt to request a duplicate title online.

If the original title is damaged, it needs to be brought along with the application for a duplicate title.

If recovering an original certificate of title for which a duplicate has been issued you must promptly surrender the original to the RMV.

The duplicate certificate of title will be printed and mailed within seven to ten business days after receipt of the application and will only be mailed to one of the following:

The owner’s mailing address entered on the RMV's database
A car dealership
A lienholder
An insurance agent

If the title is to be mailed to a dealer, the back of the application for duplicate certificate of title must be completed.
