Examiner positions

Examiners ensure that financial institutions adhere to sound practices and applicable laws, rules, and regulations. As an examiner, you will compile and analyze examination data, prepare reports, and present findings to institution management.  Location and travel requirements vary by examiner role.

Examiner I Roles:

  • Risk Management: Examines the records of depository financial institutions (banks and credit unions) to ensure they adhere to sound practices and applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Participates in the examination process, compiles and analyzes financial documents, and prepares reports on findings.
  • Licensing: Examines the records of financial companies and institutions to ensure they adhere to consumer protection laws and regulations. Participates in the examination process, analyzes compliance with the consumer protection regulations, and prepares compliance reports on findings.
  • Consumer Protection: Examines the records of financial companies and institutions to ensure they adhere to consumer protection laws and regulations.  Participates in the examination process, analyzes compliance with the consumer protection laws and regulations, and prepares compliance Examination Reports summarizing findings and corrective actions.

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting, auditing, or bank examining work; OR, 
  • Any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions (Bachelors or higher degree with a major in accounting, business administration, business management, banking or finance or education toward such a degree on a prorated basis).

Management positions

As a manager, you will have the opportunity to oversee regulatory licensing or examination reviews of financial institutions.  You will supervise examination and/or office staff.  Management opportunities may be located in Boston or field-based.

Intern positions

The DOB hires seasonal interns to work out of the Boston office. Available internships vary based on unit needs.

Consumer Assistance Unit Intern job description:

  • Respond to consumer inquiries and complaints through both verbal and written communications
  • Review complaints, documents, and pertinent information concerning alleged violations of laws, rules and regulations
  • Obtain evidence and establish facts concerning complaints and cases of alleged non-compliance with laws, rules, and regulations
  • Confer with parties to complaints
  • Prepare letters and memorandums as necessary to investigate consumer complaints

Qualifications

  • Completion of one and a half years of college
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, analytical reasoning strengths, and computer skills
  • Preferred majors: Business, Management, Economics, Finance, Communications, Public Affairs

Consumer Protection Research and Grants Unit Intern job description:

  • Compile foreclosure and mortgage-related data, draft statistical reports, and prepare presentations for community and industry meetings
  • Provide research support in various topics including: foreclosure strategies; regulatory and compliance changes; mortgage practices and fraudulent transactions
  • Assist with spreadsheet creation and analysis, including analytics of grant-evaluation metrics (advanced Microsoft Excel skills preferred)
  • Review and edit correspondence, reports, and presentations

Qualifications

  • Completion of one and a half years of college
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, analytical reasoning strengths, and computer skills
  • Preferred majors: Political Science, Business, Management, Economics, Finance, Communications

Operations Unit Intern job description:

  • Provide support to the DOB’s Operations Unit assisting with administration, staffing, and development
  • Assist in updating internal policies including internal controls, business continuity, and other operational plans where applicable
  • Compile and organize data necessary to complete a preliminary review of record retention requirements
  • Assist in the review and monitoring of the agency’s inventory
  • Assist in testing internal software systems and updating associated test cases
  • Contribute to updating the agency’s recruitment strategies and materials
  • Utilizing relevant coursework and research, review and provide recommendations on the agency’s structure and staffing
  • Support the coordination of various operational and training functions of the unit

Qualifications

  • Completion of one year of college
  • Strong attention to detail, written and oral communication skills, and computer skills
  • Preferred majors: Operations, Human Resources, Business, Management, Public Policy, Information Systems
