Learn about MassHealth dental benefits for individuals and families, including people with disabilities

MassHealth offers dental benefits to eligible children and adults.

In general, you are eligible for the dental benefit if you are enrolled in one of the following MassHealth coverage types:

  • MassHealth Standard
  • MassHealth CommonHealth
  • MassHealth Family Assistance
  • CarePlus
  • MassHealth Limited (emergency only)
  • Children’s Medical Security Plan

Covered Services for Children (under age 21)

Dental services that are available to your child include:

  • Anesthesia
  • Braces (if qualified)
  • Cleanings (2 times per calendar year)
  • Crowns
  • Dentures
  • Extractions (tooth-pulling)
  • Fillings
  • Fluoride (every 90 days)
  • Oral exams (2 times per calendar year)
  • Oral surgery
  • Root canal treatments
  • Sealants (on permanent molars)
  • Space maintainers
  • X rays
  • Any other medically necessary dental service

Some services may need to be approved by MassHealth before the dentist can provide them. The dentist will know which services these are and will request approval if he or she feels that you need these services. You do not need to do anything to request approval.

Services for Adults (members age 21 and older)

MassHealth members aged 21 and older are eligible for dental services performed by a MassHealth dentist. Adult members who are Department of Developmental Services (DDS) clients receive a different dental benefit package than adults who are not DDS clients. Examples of covered dental services for adults include:

(Non-DDS)

  • Anesthesia
  • Cleanings (2 times per calendar year)
  • Dentures
  • Extractions (tooth-pulling)
  • Fillings
  • Oral exams (2 times per calendar year)
  • Some oral surgery (such as removal of impacted teeth, biopsies, soft-tissue surgery)
  • X rays

(DDS)

  • Anesthesia
  • Cleanings (2 times per calendar year)
  • Dentures
  • Extractions (tooth-pulling)
  • Fillings
  • Oral exams (2 times per calendar year)
  • Oral surgery
  • Root canal treatment (on front teeth)
  • X rays
  • Certain otherwise not covered restorative and endodontic services, if the covered service presents undue medical risk.

Some services may need to be approved by MassHealth before the dentist can provide the service. The dentist will know which services these are and will request approval if he or she feels that you need these services. You do not need to do anything to request approval. Members eligible for MassHealth Limited are eligible for emergency dental services.
