Salem State University - Sophia Gordon for Creative and Performing Arts Center

This project involved a gut renovation of the former Mainstage Theater as the new home of the Gordon Center for the Performing Arts.

Features include a 490-seat theater with balcony and galleries, a large lobby/student lounge with 35-person conference room, a connecting corridor to the Callan Lobby to serve as an art gallery and display area, a large second floor rehearsal room and an improved scene shop.  The project also improves accessibility for the adjacent Dining Common by providing a new lift.

Project Features:

In addition to the theater / audience chamber, the following theatrical teaching and support spaces are included in the program:

  • Control Room: theater control booth for lighting, sound and stage management;
  • Crossover Corridor: space that allows actors and staff to cross from one side of the stage to the other without being seen by the audience;
  • Green Room/ Student Production Office: space for staging actors before, during, and after performances, meeting space for cast
  • Gel Room: space for the production and storage of lighting gels
  • Light Lab: teaching space for the study of lighting design.
  • Sound Computer Lab: computer lab for sound editing and live recording.
