Position Summary

The Executive Assistant provides high level administrative and secretarial support to the Chief Justice and the Legal Counsel to the Chief Justice in a setting that requires the ability to work under pressure to handle a wide variety of tasks and to treat confidential matters with discretion.

Major Duties

  • Completes a broad variety of administrative and secretarial tasks for the Chief Justice and Legal Counsel including, but not limited to: answering the telephone and greeting visitors; managing an extremely active calendar of appointments and meetings; scheduling and arranging court and committee meetings; preparing and compiling documents and materials; composing and preparing correspondence that is sometimes confidential; arranging travel and preparing expense reports related to travel; and coordinating special events
  • Assists the Chief Justice in proofreading and final editing of opinions
  • Performs non-legal research
  • Provides a bridge for smooth communication and collaboration among the Chief Justice, the SJC Associate Justices, SJC staff, and Trial Court leadership
  • Works closely and effectively with the Chief Justice to keep him well informed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities, following up appropriately
  • Prioritizes conflicting needs; handles matters expeditiously and proactively, and follows-through on projects to successful completion, often with deadline pressures
  • Maintains discretion and confidentiality in all tasks

Supervision Received

Receives supervision from the Chief Justice and the Legal Counsel to the Chief Justice.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university 
  • At least 10 years of work experience, with a minimum of five years in a high level administrative support position, preferably in a legal or governmental setting
  • Highly motivated, possessing a professional and calm demeanor
  • Strong administrative, prioritization, organizational and problem solving skills. Must be flexible and able to work under deadlines and multitask and be adaptable to various competing demands
  • Demonstrated ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail, precision, and accuracy
  • High comfort level with technology, including proficiency in MS Office.  Willingness to learn and ability to work within the court's current case management and document management systems as well as new technologies as they are implemented within the court
  • Very strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with Justices, SJC staff, Trial Court judges and staff, attorneys, and visitors to the chambers
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Mature judgment, along with a sense of humor


By statute, employees of the Massachusetts courts must be Massachusetts residents.

Salary Range

This position is Grade 18 pay scale, with a salary range from step 1 $70,747.42 to step 8 $93,257.93. New employees typically begin at or near step 1 and thereafter receive annual increases through step 8.
