Toward an Environmental Solution for Salem Harbor Water Quality

Funding for this project was provided by MassBays to Salem State University (2018)

About this project

Building off preliminary studies conducted since 2012, Salem State University will conduct water quality monitoring to determine phytoplankton community structure and provide a better understanding of forcings causing high biomass that has been documented to be responsible for increased turbidity in Salem Harbor. Results on possible causal links between high biomass and deteriorating water quality and loss of eelgrass habitat will help inform remediation actions proposed to managers and decisionmakers.  The review committee recommended a lower award than requested since they felt that the project can be downscaled to a shorter sampling season and still generate the desired outcomes.
