Updates on traffic and construction

MassDOT urges those traveling through the area to obey posted speed limits and use caution.

Daytime lane closures on I-495 North, March 26-28

MassDOT has announced closures of a single left lane on I-495 northbound in Haverhill between Exits 48 and 49 on Tuesday, March 26 through Thursday, March 28. The closures will occur between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m.. The closures are necessary for the contractor to safely install piles in the median directly adjacent to I-495 northbound. Advanced warning signs will be used onsite to notify the travelling public about the planned closure and provide updates.

What's New

Starting Monday night, March 4, crews began installing temporary barrier along the high-speed shoulders of I-495 northbound and southbound to delineate the median work zone. Barrier installation will occur during off peak hours and positioning of the barrier will not alter any existing roadway alignment or lane widths.

The contractor has continued to work through the winter months despite the cold temperatures and icy river conditions to complete the Stage 1 Access Trestle. The contractor uses the Access Trestle to drill shaft foundations for the new bridge. Two of four drilled shafts are complete with the final two under construction. Carpentry crews will begin to form the bridge substructure columns as the drilled shafts are completed in preparation for late spring structural steel installation. Crews have also mobilized to the median of I-495 to begin installing the pile supported foundations for the new bridge abutments.
