The schedule for all work is weather permitting.
Real Time Traffic Management (RTTM) System is in place and active along I-495 and adjacent roadways to warn of ongoing construction and current traffic conditions.
MassDOT urges those traveling through the area to obey posted speed limits and use caution.
Memorial Day Holiday Update - There will be no work impacting I-495 traffic from 5:00 AM Friday, May 24 through 7:00 AM Tuesday, May 28.
Daytime lane closures on I-495 North, May 21-23
MassDOT has announced closures of a single left lane on I-495 northbound in Haverhill between Exits 48 and 49 during daytime hours from Tuesday, May 21 through Thursday, May 23. The closures will occur each day between 6:00 AM and 1:00 PM. They are necessary to allow the contractor to safely install new roadway base material against the current edge of pavement in the median directly adjacent to I-495 northbound. Advanced warning signs will be used onsite to notify the traveling public about the planned closure and provide updates.
Overnight Rolling Roadblocks and Lane Closures, May 12 through May 23
MassDOT will implement overnight lane closures on I-495 North and South Sunday nights through Thursday nights from May 12 through May 23. The lane closures are necessary to allow the contractor to install steel beams on the new I-495 Bridge over the Merrimack River.
The lane closures will take place from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM Sunday night through Thursday night to prepare for and facilitate the structural steel erection. In addition, “rolling roadblocks” will be used to safely deliver the beams into the work zone (details and hours described below). These short term “rolling roadblocks” will be performed intermittently from approximately 10:00 PM and end at 5:00 AM. State Police will utilize the "rolling roadblocks" to stop traffic on I-495 for short periods of time.
- I-495 North – 1 left lane – 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM
- I-495 North – 2 left lanes – 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM
- I-495 South – 1 left lane – 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM
- I-495 South – 2 left lanes – 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM
Reduced Truck Parking at the Merrimac Parking Area, May 8 through May 23
MassDOT will temporarily reduce the number of truck parking spaces at the Merrimac Parking Area along I-495 southbound (south of Exit 53) from May 8 through May23. The temporary reduction in truck parking spaces is necessary to provide a staging area for steel beams that will be installed as part of the I-495 Bridge Replacement Project over the Merrimack River in Haverhill.
A portion of the rear truck parking area will be partitioned off with reflectorized drums to provide the necessary space for the staging of transport trailers loaded with steel beams. Loaded trailers will be staged daily at the parking area and then transported nightly to the project site.
Advanced warning signs will be deployed on I-95 southbound prior to the Visitor Center in Salisbury to advise truckers of the limited parking at the Merrimac facility.
The contractor is currently building the western half of the new northbound bridge. The substructure is complete and work is now focused on building the superstructure, which includes setting structural steel and forming the bridge deck. Work in the median is ongoing to tie-in the new bridge with the existing northbound roadway. Once the western half of the new bridge is complete, northbound traffic will be shifted onto it, and the existing northbound bridge will be demolished to make room for constructing the eastern half of the new northbound bridge.
