Updates on traffic and construction

The schedule for all work is weather permitting.

Real Time Traffic Management (RTTM) System is in place and active along I-495 and adjacent roadways to warn of ongoing construction and current traffic conditions.

MassDOT urges those traveling through the area to obey posted speed limits and use caution.

Ongoing Demolition of I-495 Northbound Bridge

MassDOT's contractor began demolishing the existing I-495 Northbound bridge in Haverhill in early October. The demolition work is ongoing, with current work focusing on the structural steel removal and demolition of the existing concrete piers in the river. Crews are expected to continue this demolition work into March on a Monday through Saturday schedule, from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Project Progress

The contractor has completed phase 1 of the project and I-495 northbound traffic is now traveling on the new bridge. Demolition of the existing northbound bridge is ongoing and the contractor has begun work for phase two construction of the easterly half of the new northbound bridge. Winter activities include bridge foundation construction, including pile and drilled shaft installation.
