Potential instructors must meet the prerequisites for the topic(s) in order to register for instructor certification training to be certified as an instructional trainer at Training Year 2020 mandated in-service programs.
Police Survival Train-the-Trainer
Police Survival is one of the mandatory TY 2020 In-service topics. This block of instruction will prepare the instructor to teach Police Survival in this year's In-service. A Power Point and lesson plan will be provided.
This topic will cover:
- What suicide is
- How an officer gets to the point of suicide; stress symptoms, signs of burnout, why officers turn to suicide, warning signs, risk factors, symptoms of depression
- What other officers can do to prevent officer suicide, how to be a good listener & communicator, coping skills, and resources both in the department and outside the department.
Prerequisite: You must meet one of the qualifications below to register to become certified as an instructional trainer in Police Survival.

- Police Response to Persons with Mental Illness Instructor
- Police Interaction to Persons with Mental Illness Instructor
- Mental Health First Aid Instructor
- CIT
- Mental health clinician
