UMass Boston - Substructure, Science & Pool Buildings Demo Quad Development

Addressing the serious deterioration of the parking garage, referred to as the “substructure”, at the heart of the UMass Boston Campus and to provide for its replacement with a new environmentally sensitive landscaped campus quadrangle.

Construction will require the demolition of the existing “substructure” garage below the plaza, the plaza itself, the original Science Building and the existing Pool Building, as well as, the development of new facades at the lower levels of the buildings that will be left without facades once the demolition is complete.  This work is in line with the recommendations of the 2009 Master Plan.

This study was completed in 2017. At that time, $78M contribution from the Higher Ed Bond Bill was committed to the project, and it was turned over to UMass Building Authority for additional study, design and implementation.
