When to report a Dig Safe violation

You should report a Dig Safe violation whenever you or someone else fails to follow the Dig Safe law.

When to report a violation

You should file a Dig Safe violation report whenever a utility company:

  • Fails to mark out its underground facilities.

A utility company must mark its underground facilities within 72 business hours after your call to Dig Safe. Failure to mark underground facilities is a violation of the Dig Safe law. If a utility company does not mark its facilities on time, you should report the violation to the DPU.

  • Fails to mark out its underground facilities accurately.

If a utility company marks its underground facilities inaccurately, you should call the company and report the violation to the DPU. The markings should not be "off" by more than 18 inches. Failure to mark accurately is a violation of the Dig Safe law. You should also contact Dig Safe for a re-mark. Do not continue to excavate until the utility corrects the problem.

  • Fails to mark out its underground facilities on time.

A utility company must mark its underground facilities by the time your Dig Safe number becomes valid, 72 business hours after your call to Dig Safe, Inc. Failure to do so is a violation of the Dig Safe law. If a utility company does not mark on time, you should report the violation to the DPU.

You should also report a violation to the DPU if you see someone not complying with the Dig Safe law in any other way.

You can report a Dig Safe violation by using our convenient form. Print out the form, fill in the relevant information, and send it to us by mail, fax, or email. Include any photographs of the incident that you have.
