Sumner Tunnel Entrance Reconstruction and Toll Plaza Demolition

The process for removing existing toll plazas is occurring in phases to ensure the safety of drivers and work zone crews and to minimize traffic disruption.

The Toll Plaza Demolition and Roadway Reconstruction Project began in October of 2016. The goal of this project was the removal of all toll plazas on the Massachusetts Turnpike and reconstruction of the roadway immediately surrounding them to improve safety and decrease congestion on I-90.

This work took place at the same time as MassDOT began All Electronic Tolling on I-90. MassDOT completed the work on the Turnpike and at the Williams Tunnel in 2017. The work to reconfigure the Sumner Tunnel toll plaza will continue into the Fall of 2018.
