Freshwater Fish Conservation in Massachusetts

MassWildlife biologists manage both cold and warmwater fisheries from the largest lakes to the smallest headwater streams.

MassWidlife responsible for the management of freshwater fisheries resources in lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers across the state. We monitor fish populations, develop regulations to protect fisheries resources, provide input to other state and federal agencies on regulations outside our jurisdiction, provide data and guidance to the public, and provide recreational opportunities for people fishing Massachusetts fresh waters. We also coordinate with other MassWildlife sections and all five MassWildlife Districts to provide input on matters of aquatic habitat protection. Our hatchery program annually produces more than 400,000 pounds of coldwater fish specifically for recreation and our biological staff manages both cold and warmwater fisheries from the largest lakes to the smallest headwater streams.
