Description

The Abbott Brook WMA is located between Route 20 and the west branch of the Westfield River and is contains mixed hardwoods and floodplain forest with some abandoned fields in the middle of the parcel.

Location, access, & parking

There is no parking access at this WMA due to there being guardrail and a steep drop-off along Route 20. The closest parking is a pull-off along route 20 by the Abbott Brook WCE and one can access the WMA through the WCE. Access to the WCE and WMA here does require wading across the west branch of the Westfield River.

Hunting opportunities

The majority of this WMA is not huntable due to hunting setbacks. The huntable sections contain good habitat for white-tailed deer.

Fishing opportunities

The WMA has 2500' of frontage on the west branch of the Westfield River which is stocked with trout.

About Wildlife Management Areas

WMAs are intentionally wild, visitors will find natural landscapes rather than maintained trails.

MassWildlife owns and manages over 220,000 acres of land to conserve fish and wildlife habitats and provide access for outdoor recreation. All WMAs are open to hunting, fishing, trapping, and other outdoor recreation activities. Visit the MassWildlife Lands Viewer for an interactive map of MassWildlife properties.

You can support land protection in Massachusetts. Contributions to the Wildlands Fund help pay for the cost of acquiring wildlife habitat. Learn more about the Wildlands Fund.
