Description
This property consists mainly of white pine and oak forests with greenbrier throughout much of the understory. Cooks Pond is adjacent to the management area and Harlow Pond is contained within the management area.
Location, access, & parking
Easy access to this management area can be found behind the John A. Armstrong Skating Rink. The gate to the management area is located in the back of the parking lot. See WMA map.
Note: WMAs are intentionally wild, visitors will find natural landscapes rather than maintained trails.
Habitat Management
Cooks Pond WMA is managed as a coastal plain pond. The water levels are fluctuated to mimic natural hydrologic conditions to promote this rare natural community.
Hunting & fishing opportunities
Game species of this management area include waterfowl, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and eastern coyote.
Good opportunities are provided for warm water species such as largemouth bass, chain pickerel, bluegill, pumpkinseed, and yellow perch.
Wildlife viewing & other features
This property was purchased to conserve, protect, and manage coastal plain pond habitat. Coastal plain ponds are globally rare natural communities. The globally rare plant species, plymouth gentian, can be found at this management area.
