Kampoosa Fen WMA

Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) are open to the public for fishing, hunting, trapping, hiking, and wildlife viewing.

Town: Stockbridge
Acreage: 72
Wildlife Management Zone: 3

Description

Kampoosa Fen WMA is a combination of swamp (the ecologically important Kampoosa Bog) and managed agriculture. The southern portion of the WMA is very wet and difficult to access. The northern areas feature upland field habitats managed under an agreement with a local farmer. The WMA is relatively small and not a popular area for outdoor recreation.

Location, access, & parking

The WMA is located west of Route 7 and south of the Massachusetts Turnpike. Access is limited to a gated way that allows access for a gas pipeline right of way. It is possible to park one or two vehicles at this access point. No formal parking areas exist. See WMA map.

Note: WMAs are intentionally wild, visitors will find natural landscapes rather than maintained trails.

Habitat management

A significant portion of the WMA is managed as field habitat. It is cut annually after July 15th under an agricultural agreement. This agreement keeps the area from reverting to mature forest.
