Poor Meadow Brook WMA

Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) are open to the public for fishing, hunting, trapping, hiking, and wildlife viewing.

Town: East Bridgewater
Acreage: 117
Wildlife Management Zone: 11
Waterfowl Zone: Central

Description

Poor Meadow Brook WMA features mixed upland forest, forested swamp, and wet meadow habitats. White pine, red and white oak, red maple, sweet pepper bush, and common greenbrier, with a variety of upland and wetland grasses, sedges, and rushes are common on this property.

Location, access, & parking

There is a parking area large enough for 5 vehicles off of Elm Street in Hanson. To reach the WMA from this parking area, you must cross through Poor Meadow Brook WCE. The WMA itself does not have a formal parking area but there is road frontage and access on Pine Ridge Road off of Hudson Street in East Bridgewater. See WMA map.

Note: WMAs are intentionally wild, visitors will find natural landscapes rather than maintained trails.

Hunting opportunities

This property provides opportunities to pursue white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and eastern coyote. The brook, along with the associated wetland habitat, provides good trapping opportunities for raccoon and mink.

Fishing opportunities

This property is bisected by Poor Meadow Brook with just over 6,000 feet of stream frontage. A stream survey conducted by MassWildlife found tessellated darter, American eel, bluegill, red fin pickerel, chain pickerel, and golden shiner. Though Poor Meadow Brook itself is not stocked with trout, the Shumatuscacant River is. The Shumatuscacant River flows into Poor Meadow Brook to the north. For more information on trout stocking, visit mass.gov/trout.
