Description
Satan’s Kingdom is bordered to the north by Vermont and features steep hillsides of upland forest composed of mature northern hardwoods (maple, birch, beech) and mixed softwoods (white pine, eastern hemlock). Dry Brook, West Wait Brook, and East Wait Brook are small streams that flow through the WMA. Occasional swamps and beaver flowages can be found as well. Abutting the WMA is another 400+ acres of Wildlife Conservation Easements that provide exceptional upland forest habitat and public access.
Location, access, & parking
The property can be accessed from Old Vernon Road and West Road in Northfield and Huckle Hill Road and Bald Mountain Road in Bernardston. There is a gravel/grass parking large enough for 3 cars on Old Vernon Road, and a 1-car grass parking area on Bald Mountain Road. See WMA map.
Note: WMAs are intentionally wild, visitors will find natural landscapes rather than maintained trails.
Hunting opportunities
White-tailed deer, black bear, aquatic furbearers, raccoon, gray squirrel, cottontail rabbit, snowshoe hare, turkey, ruffed grouse, and American woodcock all frequent this property.
Fishing opportunities
Satan’s Kingdom WMA contains segments of Dry Brook and West Wait Brook which are coldwater fish resources.
Wildlife viewing & other features
The variable topography from steep slopes and mountain tops to nearly flat, seasonally flooded wooded swamps offer prime wildlife viewing opportunities. The extensive tracts of unfragmented forests support high amounts of diversity of wildlife and vegetation. In the northeastern part of the WMA, in Northfield, there are several small black gum swamps, an unusual type of natural community.
