Tracy Pond WMA

Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) are open to the public for fishing, hunting, trapping, hiking, and wildlife viewing.

Description

This property consists predominantly of mixed stands of hardwoods. Red maple, oak species, and ash make up a large part of the WMA. White pine stands are also found throughout the property. The southern edge of the WMA connects with Middlefield State Forest. Tracy Pond sits in the northwest part of the property, not far from the parking area. It is a small, shallow, warmwater pond.

Location, access, & parking

There is a dirt parking area on Middlefield Road in Peru. See WMA map.

Note: WMAs are intentionally wild, visitors will find natural landscapes rather than maintained trails.

Habitat management

A small timber cut was conducted in 2010/2011 on the eastern section of the WMA.

Hunting opportunities

The area provides good wildlife habitat with plentiful food sources offering hunting opportunities for white-tailed deer and black bear. The pond offers waterfowl hunting opportunities on the southern edge. The WMA has agricultural use areas on its northern and eastern edges which provide good eastern coyote habitat. Ruffed grouse can also be found in the mixed forested areas.

Tracy Pond is a small and shallow pond. There are opportunities for warmwater fish species. There is shore fishing that can be accessed from the parking lot through the use of an old dirt road.

There are excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. The pond is home to many aquatic species including beaver.
