MCAD Virtual Fair Housing Conference April 8 2022

MassachusettsThe Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) is hosting a free one-day Fair Housing and Anti-Discrimination Education virtual conference on Friday, April 8 online via Zoom. This year’s theme is Resources for People at Risk of Housing Discrimination, to raise awareness about the avenues available to people residing in Massachusetts and its neighboring Native nations who are facing or have faced housing discrimination.

The event begins at 10am on Friday, April 8, 2022. It is free and open to the public. Registration is required to attend. Panel topics will include “Combating Environmental Racism” starting at 10:30am and “Resources in Place and in Progress” at 1:45pm.

“It is an honor to be hosting representatives from two native nations among our esteemed panelists, as we come together for a day of learning and conversations centered on combating the housing inequalities that our communities are facing,” MCAD Chairwoman Sunila Thomas George said.

The conference will also feature remarks from Daniel Weaver, Regional Director I of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), MCAD Commissioners Monserrate Quiñones, and Neldy Jean-Francois. Panelists include: Cheryl Andrews-Maltais, Chairwoman of The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah); Chief George Spring Buffalo, Chairman of The Pocasset Wampanoag Tribe of the Pokanoket Nation; Massachusetts State Senator Lydia Edwards; Gary Adamkiewicz, Associate Professor of Environmental Health and Exposure Disparities at Harvard School of Public Health; William Berman, Professor at Suffolk Law School and Director of Suffolk University’s Housing Discrimination Testing Program; Ethan Crawford, Litigator Attorney at The Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination; Jonathan Levy, Professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental Health at Boston University; Laura Rosi, CEO of Housing Families; and Kelly Turley, Associate Director of The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.

    The MCAD is the independent state agency that enforces the Massachusetts anti-discrimination laws by investigating Discrimination Complaints to determine if the case may proceed to conciliation or a public hearing at the Commission.
