Self-Identification for Executive Department Employees
Self-Identification All Identities Welcome!
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is committed to recognizing and promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace where all employees are seen, valued, and accepted. Our diversity is essential to our success!
Through an initiative launched in 2024 to reaffirm Self-identification across the Executive Departments, the Human Resources Division in collaboration with Agency management, HR leadership, and Diversity teams aimed to spotlight the abundance of diversity amongst our 44,000-plus Commonwealth employees. This initiative focused on learning how employees understood the self-identification process, how self-identifying aids in determining areas for improvement in outreach, recruitment efforts, policies and practices, and the key steps toward our goal of a diverse and inclusive workforce.
Self-Identification for Executive Department employees is a confidential, voluntary and easy self-service process. It allows employees to share aspects of their identity information, including race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, pronouns, preferred name, disability and veteran status1.
1Additional information/paperwork is required to self-identify Veteran status, such as a copy of your DD214. Please refer to the Veteran Self-Identification FAQ in the Resources Page or your Agency Veterans Coordinator for more information.

Self-identification allows employees to share aspects of their identity information, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, pronouns, preferred name, disability and veteran status.
