The Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) are working to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which contribute to climate change.
The Commonwealth’s Global Warming Solutions Act, signed into law in 2008, set the legally-enforceable goals of reducing GHG emissions, including a requirement for reducing emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. The Commonwealth’s Clean Energy and Climate Plan (CECP) for 2025 and 2030 is a roadmap of actions for all sectors, including transportation, to reach these goals.
MassDOT and MPOs work with Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) to consider GHG emissions in transportation planning. Each year, the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) includes analysis of the GHG impacts of programmed projects.
The STIP also includes the Carbon Reduction Strategy, required by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which supports funding of MassDOT and MBTA priorities in the CECP.
