Statement of Attorney General Martha Coakley on Consumers Affected by Tweeter Closing

BOSTON – Today, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley issued the following statement after learning that electronics store Tweeter abruptly closed its doors earlier this week after filing for bankruptcy in the United States Bankruptcy Court in Delaware in early November.

“Consumers who bought merchandise, gift certificates or warranties from Tweeter should file a Proof of Claim form with the Delaware Bankruptcy Court to try and recover their money.  This form can be found online at http://www.deb.uscourts.gov/.  Our office encourages consumers to contact our Consumer Hotline at (617) 727-8400 if they need assistance filling out these forms or to report any problems they have with Tweeter. Our office will continue to monitor this situation.”

Due to the bankruptcy proceedings, the Attorney General’s Consumer Hotline cannot mediate consumer complaints.  Consumers should therefore file a Proof of Claim with the Delaware Bankruptcy Court.  Consumers are encouraged to fill out this form as soon as possible and have as much information about their product available when filling out the form. The case number to reference on the Proof of Claim form is: Tweeter OPCO, LLC 08-12646 (MFW).
