Fireworks

  • Enjoy the many professional, supervised fireworks displays that take place in the summer months. However, remember that the possession and use of any fireworks by private citizens is illegal in Massachusetts, including any fireworks that were purchased out of state or by catalog. This includes sparklers, party poppers, snappers, firecrackers and cherry bombs.

  • Grill Safety-5/20/2009
    • State Fire Marshal Coan said, “Outdoor cooking incidents, such as gas grill fires, burns from flare-ups and improper use of charcoal lighter fluid, increase as people take to their backyards to enjoy a barbecue.” Almost three-quarters (72%) of all gas grill fires occur between May and September

  • Keep Smoking Materials out of the Mulch-5/1/2009
    • “Improper disposal of smoking materials in bark mulch, used to landscape around buildings, caused a $5 million fire at a Peabody apartment complex last May and displaced 750 people temporarily and the residents of 36 apartments permanently,” said State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan. “Don’t throw cigarettes butts into mulch; it creates the perfect fire triangle – heat, fuel and air,” he added.
