June 16, 2008 - Culminating a year-long legislative effort, Governor Deval Patrick, Governor signs Life Sciences Billjoined by Senate President Therese Murray and Speaker of the House Salvatore F. DiMasi, signed pioneering legislation today at the Joslin Diabetes Center as he unveiled for the first time the comprehensive, innovative Massachusetts Life Sciences Law. The legislation, a 10-year, $1-billion investment in the industry, will secure and expand Massachusetts’ life science supercluster. “With this initiative we take our rightful place as a global leader in the life sciences,” said Governor Patrick.

June 17, 2008 - Governor of the Year: One day after signing his 10-year, $1 billion Life Sciences Initiative, Governor Deval Patrick today received the Biotechnology Industry Organization’s (BIO) Governor of the Year Award in recognition of his leadership and support of the biosciences industry.
“I am honored to receive this award from BIO, and I share it proudly with the many people who helped us move the Life Sciences Initiative forward," said Governor Patrick.

May 6, 2008 - In the latest life science victory for Governor speaks at Shire groundbreakingMassachusetts, Governor Patrick attended a groundbreaking for the expansion of Shire Human Genetic Therapies in Lexington. Shire HGT announced in February that the company will remain in Massachusetts and invest $394 million to expand their Lexington campus, creating an estimated 680 additional jobs and making it the global center for Shire's Human Genetic Therapies research, development, and production.

April 16, 2008  - Governor Patrick speaks in Billerica. Governor Patrick travelled to Billerica to announce the expansion of life sciences company EMD Serono, Inc., and Merck Serono, both affiliates of Merck KGaA of Germany. The company will invest $50 million to expand its Billerica facility, creating at least 100 new jobs.

April 3, 2008  - Governor Deval Patrick joined local officials and Organogenesis, Inc. Governor speaks at Organogenesis announcement  April 3 - Governor Deval Patrick joined local officials and CEO Geoff MacKay to announce that the Massachusetts-based company, which was once planning to move its operations outside of the state, is initiating an expansion of its global headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Canton, MA.

March 20, 2008 – The Massachusetts Senate passed a version of the life sciences bill. The governor released a statement hailing the decision as an important step forward for Massachusetts. "Investing this money over 10 years in our workforce and bringing together the resources of our unparalleled research universities, teaching hospitals, and industry will help us create jobs and find cures," said Governor Patrick.

February 13, 2008 – Governor Patrick travelled to UMass Lowell to announce the award of a $4 million grant to be used for the construction/refurbishment of a new Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center ("M2D2") innovation center, a sign of the economic benefits that passage of life science legislation will bring with it.

October 31, 2007 – Governor Patrick visited the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester to discuss his Life Sciences package currently being discussed in the Legislature, and the future of the industry in the Commonwealth.  Joining the Governor were UMass Medical School Chancellor Michael Collins, President Jack Wilson, Nobel Laureate Craig Mello PhD, and a number of local state officials.

July 19, 2007 – Joined by legislative leaders at a special Joint Session of the Legislature, Governor Deval Patrick today filed legislation providing for a major investment in and expansion of the Life Sciences industry in Massachusetts. The legislation is a comprehensive plan to make Massachusetts the global leader in the life sciences industry.
