Memorial Day 2008 Local Events Across the State


Below is a listing of community events statewide for Memorial Day 2008. Please note that this list is regularly updated with additional events. The list is arranged alphabetically by city/town name. For additional information on any event, please call the city/town hosting the event. Ask for the "veterans services" office at city/town hall, who supplied this information to DVS.

Adams

Flag Placement. Once again Memorial Day is upon us, and all are encouraged to join with us on Saturday, May 10th, at 10 AM For all who are interested please show up at any of the Town cemeteries for flag placement duty.

An Open House sponsored by Legion Post #160 and VFW Post #1995 will follow at the American Legion Post #160. All VFW and Legion members of the Post’s and all participants in the parade are invited.

Agawam

Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemeteries. Monday, May 26, 2008 ceremony begins at 1:00 p.m. in Agawam.

Attleboro

Date: 26 May 08

Start Time:10:30am   Location: Parade will start on Hayward street though County Street and end at Capron Park. 

Ceremony: Capron Park. The City of Attleboro will be hosting the 2nd Marine Aviation Marching Band from Cherry Point North Carolina. We will have some static military displays and possible F-22's, F-15's & Black Hawk Fly-over.

Auburn

May 26th Parade starting at 10 a.m. from Dooley’s Cleaners ending at Hillside Cemetery, guest speakers and presentations at the Cemetery immediately after the parade. Lunch at the Chester P Tuttle American Legion Post on Bancroft St after ceremonies.

Barnstable

Town of Barnstable Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday May 26,2008 Main Street Centerville, Ma. The Parade will form at 9:30 am at the Centerville Library and kick off sharply at 10:00 am. Proceeds to Beechwood Cemetery for the Memorial Day Program.

Belchertown

The Annual Memorial Day ceremonies are set for May 24th, 25th and 26th 2008:

  • Saturday, May 24th The American Legion Auxiliary will sell poppies at local businesses.
  • Sunday, May 25th Veterans of all faiths are invited to attend Sunday morning services at Dwight Chapel at 9:00 am.
  • Sunday, May 25th The Veterans Council of Belchertown in conjunction with The Friends of Quabbin and The Department of Conservation and Recreation invite everyone to attend the traditional memorial services at Quabbin Park Cemetery. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 am.
  • Monday, May 26th at 9:00 – 9:15 am South Cemetery a veteran’s salute to the veteran’s interred at South cemetery, everyone is invited.
  • Monday, May 26th, Belchertown Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony, 10:00 am at the town hall and town common. Everyone is invited.

Belmont

The town of Belmont will have its annual Memorial Day Parade/Ceremonies starting at 11:00am in Cushing Square proceeding to the Belmont cemetery for a remembrance service and then march on to the Belmont High School where the vets are honored with a BBQ.  This all takes place on Monday, May 26, 2008.

Beverly

Wednesday May 21, 2008. The Vietnam Veterans Post # 1, American Legion, VFW And Vittori-Rocci Post, Members of the JRROTC at Beverly High School and Civil Air Patrol Will Assemble at the E. Lothrop Street Entrance at Central Cemetery at 5:00 PM to flag the Graves at Central Cemetery and then proceed to St. Mary’s Cemetery, the is welcome to participate.

In the event of rain we will meet on Thursday May 22nd at the same place and time.

SATURDAY MAY 24TH 9:00 AM. The veterans organizations, JRROTC and the local Scouts will assemble at N. Beverly Cemetery parking lot adjacent to 2nd Congregational Church to flag the graves; the public is welcome to participate.

Sunday, May 25 – 1:30 p.m. A parade to Baxter Veterans' Memorial Park where we honor all Deceased Veterans and then proceed to the cemetery Veterans' plot for more ceremony and then to the American Legion Post where we disband and have a free cook out.

Boston

Cambridge

Parade:  Kicks off from the Cambridge Common at 9:30 a.m. proceeds through Harvard Sq, down Mt. Auburn St., and end at the Cambridge Cemetery on Coolidge Ave.

Observance:  Begins immediately after parade (approx 11:00 a.m.) Keynote recently returned Iraqi veteran CPT Eric Dinoto, Commanding Officer Co C, 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry, MAANG.

Observance will be held at the Cambridge Cemetery.

Canton

Memorial Day Parade , Monday, May 26 at 9:00 am from the Canton High School to Canton Corner Cemetery.

Falmouth

MAY 26, 2008, 9:45 A.M. Falmouth Green followed by ceremony at Library.

Framingham

Cemetery visit 0800 to 11:00. Town Hall Ceremony: 11:00 to 12:00

Gloucester

Memorial Day Observances on Monday, May 26, 2008. The Ceremony begins at Gloucester High School at 9:00 AM with a parade to the World War II

Greenfield

Parade forms @ middle school—starts @ 10 am with 5 stops ending @ Veterans Mall for services. All on the May 26, 2008.

Holliston

May 26th--9:00 AM cemetery services at VFW Post-parade steps off at 11:00AM from VFW Post

Hopedale

Hopkinton

Lawrence

Monday May 26, 2008, 9:00am  Bellevue Cemetery  100 Reservoir Street, Lawrence, MA 01841. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Medfield

a parade to Baxter Veterans' Memorial Park where we honor all Deceased Veterans and then proceed to the cemetery Veterans' plot for more ceremony and then to the American Legion Post where we disband and have a free cook out.

Melrose

Saturday 24 May 2008, 9:00 AM Wyoming Cemetery decoration of graves by scouting groups followed by flag burning ceremony. All veterans are strongly urged to attend and to share there stories with the scouts every year we place thousands of flags and this is a worthwhile event.

Sunday 25 May. 9:00am breakfast at VFW, 10:30am, 11:00am placing wreaths at veterans memorials, 11:30 am Church service St Mary’s Church, 12:30- 1:30 parade forms at City hall Main Street, 1:30 parade to Wyoming cemetery, followed by ceremonies at civil war lot and Veterans lot.

This year we will welcome B 182 Cav. as parade marshals. We are always looking for antique cars and military Vehicles. Contact Office of Veterans Services, John Dunne, 781-979-4186  or 781-665-4611.

New Bedford

NOTE:  New Step off location and new parade route.

The New Bedford Memorial Day Parade steps of on Monday, May 26, 2008 at 11:00 AM from New Bedford High School on Hathaway Blvd and Parker Street. Route change this year down Parker Street to County Street to Pope Street to Clasky Common Park where Memorial Day ceremonies will take place.

Norfolk

May 26-Parade and services start at 7:30 AM at Norfolk Federated Church.

Northampton

Parade on Monday, May 26, 2008 in Florence. Starting at Trinity Row and ending on Park Street Cemetery. Step off for the Parade is 10:00 AM. Then we move to a ceremony at Cosmian Green.

Norwood

Memorial Day 2008 Weekend Events. Saturday, May 23 - Flags on Veterans' graves, Highland Cemetery 8:00 AM.

Monday May 26 - Memorial Mass, St Catherine's Church 8:00 AM, Parade, Washington St. to Winter St. to Highland Cemetery  10:00 AM, Ceremonies, Highland Cemetery 11:00 AM, Memorial Corner Dedication, 1329 Washington St., Fallen Hero Francis G. Bowles, US Army, WW II  1:00 PM.

Pittsfield

Parade in Pittsfield, starting at 10:00 with a fly-over, then on to the Pittsfield Cemetery for a memorial program.

Quincy

Vietnam memorial dedication in Quincy...call # 508-942-5017.

Parade and ceremonies on Monday May 26th. The parade starts at 10:30 from the parking lot of the Quincy Credit Union 100 Quincy Ave., and ceremonies at 11:00 A.M.at Mt. Wollaston Cemetery 20 Sea Street. The Quincy Veterans Council sponors the events. 

Quincy will have a parade: march up Hancock St. to the church of the Presidents, go past and turn hard right and at the rear of the church we will turn left down Coddington Street to Mount Wollaston Cemetery - services will take place at the Veterans section.  Parade step off at 10:30 AM and the services should begin just about 11:00M, services last about 30 minutes.  Coalation to follow and be announced on the 26th, after the services.

Spencer

Veterans Day Parade in Spencer is Memorial Day May 26, 2008 at 9:00 AM Starting at American Legion, Main Street, Spencer, MA  followed by services at Isaac Lothrop Prouty Park.

Sudbury

Cemetery visit 0700 to 0900. Parade 0900 to 11:30. Town Hall Ceremony 11:30 to 12:00. 90th Ans. WWI Poster Show @ Hosmer House, 10:00 to 2:00

Swansea

Swansea Ceremonies commence at 10 AM in front of the town hall. Parade will step off at 1 PM.  

West Springfield

Monday May 26th @ 9:00 A.M. West Springfield will conduct a Memorial Day Parade

Westford

Westford Town Common (Main, Lincoln St., & Boston Rd.) 11:00 AM

Parade Westford Center– Roudenbush CC Start (Main St.) 12:00 AM

Wilmington

The Town of Wilmington is having our Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26,2008 we step off at 10:00 from the Market Basket parking lot on main street and march to the Wildwood Cemetery. At 11:00 we have our cemetery service.

Winchendon

Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemeteries. Monday, May 26, 2008 ceremony begins at 1:00 p.m. in Winchendon.

Worcester
