OTA Mission Statement
The Office of Technical Assistance and Technology (OTA), the Commonwealth's center for technical information and assistance, helps businesses and other organizations improve their environmental performance as well as conserve energy, water and other resources. OTA promotes the implementation of management strategies, systems and technologies that enable businesses to enhance their competitiveness as they reduce use of toxic chemicals, prevent pollution, conserve resources, and ensure worker health and safety. For nearly two decades, OTA has been a cornerstone of the Commonwealth's efforts to provide citizens with a cleaner and healthier environment.
Since its establishment in 1990, the Office of Technical Assistance and Technology (OTA) has provided a host of non-regulatory, strictly confidential services that have helped more than 1,400 Massachusetts facilities use less toxic processes and boost their economic performance. OTA has been instrumental in reducing the use of millions of pounds of toxic chemicals and saving companies millions of dollars in operating costs. As part of the Commonwealth's Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, OTA has maintained a focus on toxics use reduction as it has expanded its service offerings. OTA's legislative mandate now calls for a direct focus on sustainability practices. As a result, OTA has accelerated its promotion of management strategies, systems and technologies that prevent pollution and conserve resources, specifically energy and water.
The Office of Technical Assistance and Technology (OTA) provides a host of non-regulatory, strictly confidential services to toxics users. Services encompass compliance assistance and on-site technical support to reduce toxics use, improve energy efficiency and conserve water and other resources. OTA's services also reflect the changing profile of the Massachusetts economy. For instance, OTA supports life sciences, medical device and other emerging, high-growth industries by providing pre-permitting and other assistance.
Through its education, outreach and other efforts, the Office of Technical Assistance and Technology (OTA) promotes toxics use reduction and resource conservation. As a complement to the on-site technical support it provides business, OTA sponsors workshops and conferences; recruits businesses using innovative technology to host demonstration site events; supports a training center for industrial painters to help them reduce pollution and paint waste; develops resource tracking software tools; and publishes advisory and guidance publications, newsletters, and case studies.
Every day, OTA teams help improve the environmental and economic performance of Massachusetts companies. Our technical staff draws upon an extraordinary breadth of hands-on manufacturing experience in helping businesses address issues related to toxics use reduction, pollution prevention, energy efficiency and water conservation. Most staff members have held plant operation responsibilities during their careers. They understand the technical issues related to implementing pollution prevention or energy efficiency strategies, the regulatory implications and potential impacts on the company's bottom line. Underscoring the quality of their work, OTA personnel have made over 3,600 site visits to Massachusetts facilities and over 50 percent of the time companies have asked them to return to help solve new problems!
