Dentists who have not been awarded a DMD or DDS degree from a CODA-accredited dental school in the United States or equivalent approved dental school in Canada, but have successfully completed a dental school program at a reputable dental college, as defined by M.G.L. c. 112, s. 46, may qualify for the following:

            Dental Intern Limited Licensure, which allows practice in a public health clinic, hospital, dental school, or prison under the supervision of a Massachusetts licensed dentist.  For further details and requirements, please refer to the following application:

            Full-Time Faculty Limited Licensure, which allows practice as a full-time faculty member in a dental school under the supervision of a Massachusetts licensed dentist.  For further details and requirements, please refer to the following application:

Please note that the Board of Registration in Dentistry does not have authority to regulate the specific hiring practices in the locations that employ limited licensees.

Dentists and Dental Hygienists: Note that in order to be eligible for a Massachusetts dental hygiene license, an applicant must have been awarded a dental hygiene degree from a CODA-accredited dental hygiene school in the United States.

Dentists, Dental Hygienists, and Dental Assistants may be eligible for Dental Assistant Licensure, which allows practice as a dental assistant trained on-the-job (OJT).  Please refer to the Board’s regulations at 234 CMR 4.12 for details.  Also note that in order to take radiographs as a dental assistant, the foreign-trained dentist will need to obtain certification in dental radiography per the Board’s regulations at 234 CMR 5.09.  (These referenced regulations are found on the Board’s web site under Statutes, Rules, and Regulations.)
