Office of Population Health

The Office of Population Health was established in 2017 to accelerate the use and dissemination of data and advanced analytics to identify disparities in health outcomes, risk factors and the social determinants of health. We make this information available to support system-level improvements aimed at achieving health equity and optimal health for all Massachusetts residents.

Who we serve

We oversee and support the following divisions: Data Science, Research, and Epidemiology Division (DSRE); the Massachusetts Cancer Registry (MCR); the Registry of Vital Records and Statistics (RVRS); the Health Survey Program; and the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Additionally, OPH sponsors 2 key data initiatives:

  • The Public Health Data Warehouse (PHD): A unique research tool that provides access to timely, linked, multi-year data for analysis of fatal and non-fatal opioid overdoses as well as other health priorities and trends aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality in the Commonwealth; and
  • The Population Health Information Tool (PHIT): A public, interactive website that enables analysis, reporting and mapping of roughly 30 Massachusetts health data sets framed by six social determinants of health, and focused on actionable strategies that can address the health needs of communities.
