Curriculum Planning Guidebook

The Guidebook supports the Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) Program with information about student development, fire safety behaviors and how to teach the behaviors to different age groups, and with resources and ideas about creating lesson plans.

The Guidebook is a living document and ideas for changes, new resources and additions are welcome. Forward them to SAFE.Firesafetydivision@mass.gov.

This five lesson program uses literacy, movement, music, and drama to teach preschoolers fire safety concepts.

The program includes easy-to-use lessons and activities to teach fire safety messages and to show children what to do if there’s a fire.

Elementary Teaching Resources

Hunt for Home Hazards - A Grade 4-6 Fire Safety Activity

This PowerPoint™ presentation teaches children to become home fire safety inspectors. For most activities, children can work independently, looking for home fire hazards. Parents and children can work together to check smoke and CO alarms, test to make sure they are working, and develop a home escape plan. The presentation includes videos that assist learning, and links to other activities. Parents and children are encouraged to send photos of themselves testing their alarms or practicing their home escape plan to their fire department using the hashtag #makesomenoiseforfiresafety.

Home Escape Planning - A Grade 3 Fire Safety Activity

Learn Not to Burn - NFPA
Learn Not to Burn® (LNTB)  presents six fire-safety messages for grades K-2 using classroom lessons, activities and home connections. It can be used alone or integrated in language arts core curriculum. The fire department or classroom teachers can use the programs.

This 16-page booklet is presented in a checklist format. Use this checklist with older adults to prepare them for an emergency and to spot possible safety problems in homes. The booklet can be used by older adults, or as a teaching tool for fire safety educators.
