SNAP Online Purchasing Program FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions on how to use your Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) EBT to buy food online. Current federal approved retailers include: Amazon, BJs, Daily Table, Geissler's Supermarket, Shaw's, Star Market, Stop & Shop, and Walmart, as well as ALDI, Big Y, Brothers Marketplace, Hannaford, McKinnon's Supermarkets, Price Chopper, Price Rite Marketplace, Roche Bros., Stop & Shop, Sudbury Farms and Wegmans via Instacart.

General

1. What is SNAP? How can I apply?
SNAP (formerly called food stamps) provides a monthly benefit to buy healthy food. Check your eligibility and apply at DTAConnect.com or call the DTA Assistance Line at
(877) 382-2363.

2. I am a retailer and I want to join Massachusetts’s SNAP Online Purchasing Program. What do I need to do?
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approves retailers for the online purchasing program. Learn more here.

3. What are the benefits to using your EBT card to buy groceries online?

You can shop conveniently and privately from anywhere.  

4. Can I use my SNAP benefits to pay for the delivery fee?
No. Due to federal rules, you can only use your SNAP benefits to buy SNAP eligible food items. You must pay for fees with another form of payment, like a credit card or gift card.

5. I receive TAFDC or EAEDC benefits. Can I use my cash benefits to buy items online?
No. You currently cannot use your cash benefits on your EBT card to buy food and non-food items online. If you have a bank account you can ask your DTA case manager to sign up for direct deposit so your benefits go directly into your bank account. L

6. How can I check by EBT card balance?

  • On DTA Connect,
  • Using the automated prompts on the DTA Assistance Line (877) 382-2363, or
  • Calling the EBT Customer Service number (800) 997-2555 (number on the back of your EBT card).

Look for the ‘SNAP EBT Eligible’ label by the product’s name.

BJs

2. Is there a delivery fee?

Free Pick Up Today is a free service available in all Clubs. It allows you to order items from BJs.com and pick them up at your local Club without incurring any shipping costs.

Shipping costs are calculated by your location and the shipping origin of the items you have purchased.

Daily Table

1. Is there a delivery fee?

Daily Table offers free grocery delivery to customers within a two-mile radius of each of its stores in Roxbury, Dorchester and Cambridge.

2. When is delivery available?

Pickup and delivery times are available from Monday-Saturday 10am – 6pm and Sunday 12pm-5pm. Same day pickup is based on order volume and availability. Pickup times can also be scheduled 5 days in advance based on availability.

Instacart (multiple retailers)

1. Which retailers are approved through Instacart?

ALDI, Brothers Marketplace, Hannaford, McKinnon's Supermarkets, Price Chopper, Price Rite Marketplace, Roche Bros., Stop & Shop, Sudbury Farms and Wegmans.

2. How will I know which items are eligible to buy with SNAP?
Visit Instacart to see step-by-step instructions and screenshots on filtering by SNAP eligible foods.

3. How does payment work?

Residents can shop via the Instacart online site and mobile app. Once an Instacart customer profile is created, customers can enter their EBT SNAP card information as a form of payment. Once EBT-eligible items are added to their cart, customers will be able to select how much of their benefits they would like to allocate to the order. 

4. Is there a delivery fee? 

Yes, fees vary on Instacart for deliveries under $35. Delivery starts at $3.99 for same-day orders over $35.

5. Can the groceries be delivered?
Delivery options vary by location. Go to https://www.instacart.com/ebt-snap and type in your zip code to see what options are near you. Orders for delivery and pickup can be placed by customers for receipt in as fast as an hour or scheduled several days in advance.

Stop & Shop

1. Do I need an online account to use SNAP EBT for online grocery orders?

Yes, you must create a Stop & Shop account or be signed into your existing online shopping account to use SNAP EBT payment by visiting www.stopandshop.com or downloading the Stop & Shop mobile app. You will also need an alternative payment method such as a credit/debit card to cover any items not eligible for SNAP, taxes, pickup/delivery fees, and driver tips.

2. Which items are eligible for SNAP?

While shopping, use the ‘SNAP Eligible’ filter and sort tools to identify these items across the site.

3. Can I use coupons and promo codes when using SNAP EBT online?

Yes, please make sure to apply all coupons and promo codes before attempting to use SNAP benefits with your order. Customers new to Pickup and Delivery can use promo code “SSONLINE50” on their first order for $50 off and free* Delivery and Pickup for 60 days. *For terms and conditions or for more information, please visit www.stopandshop.com/new-customer.

4. Is there a minimum order amount required when using SNAP EBT?

No, if you have a SNAP EBT card on file in your account, you do not need to meet the order minimum for pickup or delivery as long as you apply SNAP funds to your orders.

5. How do returns work if I pay with SNAP EBT?

If you need to return an item for any reason, we will credit the refund to your SNAP EBT account or to your selected payment method, whichever applies.

6. Can I use my EBT card when placing an online order for Stop & Shop Pickup if I do not live in Massachusetts but shop at a store in Massachusetts?

Yes. You have a right to use your SNAP in all 50 states. Many SNAP recipients live near and shop in border states – such as Connecticut, Rhode Island and New York. If a customer lives in a neighboring state and selects a Stop & Shop store in Massachusetts for grocery pickup, they will be able to use their EBT card with their order.

Contact Stop & Shop customer care at 800-767-7772 or by tapping the “Stop & Shop Chat” option on www.stopandshop.com or on the Stop & Shop mobile app.

Walmart

  1. How will I know which items are eligible to buy with SNAP?

When you go to checkout, the payment screen will show what items are SNAP eligible and how much money is left to pay with other forms of payment. 

  1. Is there a delivery fee?

Yes, fees vary $7.95 - $9.95. You also have the option to pay a flat fee of $98 per year for no delivery fees.

  1. Can the groceries be delivered?

Delivery options vary by location. Go to Walmart.com/groceries and type in your zip code to see what options are near you.
