Chicopee fire investigation

CHICOPEE — A fire in a Chicopee apartment building claimed one person’s life tonight, said Chicopee Fire Chief Matthew M. Cross, Chicopee Police Chief Eric Watson, State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine, and Hampden County District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni.

“On behalf of the Chicopee Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the family,” said Chief Cross.

At about 7:35 pm, WESTCOMM Regional Dispatch Center notified the Chicopee Fire Department of an alarm activation on Benoit Circle at the Edward J. Bury Apartments. On arrival, firefighters observed smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building.

Firefighters immediately made entry to attack the fire and search for occupants. They located one person, an adult, deceased. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the unit of origin. Give other residents of the multi-family building will be temporarily displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.

The origin and cause of the fire are being investigated by State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, the Chicopee Fire Department, Chicopee Police Department, and State Police assigned to the Hampden County DA’s office. They are assisted by the Department of Fire Services’ Code Compliance & Enforcement Unit.
