Welcome to the PSBO
EOPSS established the PSBO to coordinate Commonwealth activities with the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet). Congress established FirstNet in 2012 to provide emergency responders with a nationwide, high-speed, wireless network dedicated to public safety. This National Public Safety Broadband Network (NPSBN) will provide prioritized data communications to first responders during emergencies and reliable, secure access every day.
This year promises to be busy times for FirstNet activities in Massachusetts. Earlier this year, FirstNet announced its selection of a vendor - AT&T - to implement the National Public Safety Broadband Network. This June, FirstNet will present the PSBO and the Governor's Office with the details of its proposed plan for Massachusetts. This plan is expected to specify planned coverage, cost, supported devices, timelines, and other information critical to the implementation of the wireless data network here in the Commonwealth. Initial implementation of the network in Massachusetts could begin as early as the end of this year and is expected to be completed by 2022. In addition, the PSBO has issued a request for responses to seek alternative plans, should the Governor decide to implement the NPSBN radio access network using the "opt out" alternative for the national wireless network buildout. FirstNet has provided a baseline map of where public safety coverage objectives are concentrated throughout the state. This is based on locations of population, buildings, roads, public safety officials, and critical infrastructure. The History of FirstNet and the Public Safety Broadband Network
The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) was created by Congress in 2012 to establish a nationwide broadband network for public safety. The final recommendation of the 9/11 Commission, the network will connect police officers, firefighters and EMS providers like never before. This video provides a short history of the NPSBN and the creation of FirstNet. View more videos like this on our FirstNet Videos page.
Priority, Pre-emption, and Quality of Service Tutorial: LTE Basic Concepts
FirstNet and the Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) have coordinated to develop a two-part video tutorial to explain some of the key concepts regarding priority, pre-emption, and quality of service for the nationwide public safety broadband network (NPSBN). The first video focuses on the basic Long Term Evolution (LTE) concepts of these features. View more videos like this on our FirstNet Videos page.
