Welcome to the PSBO
EOPSS established the PSBO to coordinate Commonwealth activities with the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet). Congress established FirstNet in 2012 to provide emergency responders with a nationwide, high-speed, wireless network dedicated to public safety. This National Public Safety Broadband Network (NPSBN) will provide prioritized data communications to first responders during emergencies and reliable, secure access every day.
This summer and fall have been a busy time for FirstNet activities in Massachusetts. In addition to continuing outreach activities with groups like the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts (FCAM), the PSBO has led data collection activities to respond to FirstNet's information requests from earlier this year. This has included:
- designing and issuing a comprehensive survey to public safety entities in the Commonwealth,
- analyzing wireless 911 calls for service across the state,
- developing a proposed approach for the phased deployment of the NPSBN in Massachusetts,
- and reviewing actual data usage trends by many police and fire departments.
The results of these activities were submitted to FirstNet in September. More
FirstNet has provided a baseline map of where public safety coverage objectives are concentrated throughout the state. This is based on locations of population, buildings, roads, public safety officials, and critical infrastructure. To view the baseline coverage objectives across the state and in your community, use the Massachusetts FirstNet Baseline Coverage Objectives Map tool.
The History of FirstNet and the Public Safety Broadband Network
The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) was created by Congress in 2012 to establish a nationwide broadband network for public safety. The final recommendation of the 9/11 Commission, the network will connect police officers, firefighters and EMS providers like never before. This video provides a short history of the NPSBN and the creation of FirstNet. View more videos like this on our FirstNet Videos page.
Priority, Pre-emption, and Quality of Service Tutorial: LTE Basic Concepts
FirstNet and the Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) have coordinated to develop a two-part video tutorial to explain some of the key concepts regarding priority, pre-emption, and quality of service for the nationwide public safety broadband network (NPSBN). The first video focuses on the basic Long Term Evolution (LTE) concepts of these features. View more videos like this on our FirstNet Videos page.
