The Registry of Vital Records and Statistics maintains birth, death and marriage records that occur in Massachusetts from 1926 to the present. Vital Records have been registered in Massachusetts since 1635. Statewide collection began in 1841. Records for events that occurred from 1841-1925 are available at the State Archives. Earlier records may be available at the City or Town of Occurrence.

- Certain records are restricted from public access. Identification may be required for processing some orders. More information regarding restricted records is available by reviewing the Registry’s Access Policy.
Only certain individuals may apply to RVRS for a copy of a birth record established prior to an adoption. More information about which individuals can apply to RVRS for a copy of pre-adoption birth records can be found on this page.
- The Registry of Vital Records and Statistics maintains indexes and records on site at the Registry offices. There is no specific records information or index online.
- Note that ONLY CERTIFIED COPIES of records are issued by the Registry of Vital Records and Statistics, regardless of intended use.
