BOSTON - With the some parts of the state expecting as much as six to eight inches of snow overnight, the Patrick-Murray Executive Office of Consumer Affairs and its Division of Insurance are encouraging consumers to take proactive steps to protect their property from flood and wind damage.
"As we have learned from the weather related events of the past two years, it is always better to be over prepared for storms," said Barbara Anthony, the Undersecretary of the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. August 30, 2012 - Boston - The Patrick-Murray Administration's Division of Insurance today disapproved a request from the Workers' Compensation Rating and Inspection Bureau to increase Massachusetts workers’ compensation rates by 18.8 percent, meaning rates will be unchanged and businesses will save an estimated $200 million on projected premium increases.

Patrick-Murray Administration Approves $56.8 Million in Health Insurance Rebates for Small Businesses and Individuals
BOSTON – June 26, 2012 – The Commissioner of the Patrick-Murray Administration's Division of Insurance, Joseph G. Murphy, today announced that individual citizens and small employers in the Commonwealth will benefit from nearly $57 million in rebates from five of the state's largest health insurers.
The rebates will be delivered to 50,000 individual policyholders and an additional 50,000 small businesses and their employees. Individuals will receive on average $205 and businesses will receive on average $936. The exact amount of the rebate will be based on the carrier and plan in which the participants are part. The $56.8 million in rebates, determined by the Division in concert with the insurance carriers, is approximately $10 million more than the carriers had initially estimated and reported to the Division. Murphy, the Commissioner of the Patrick-Murray Administration's Division of Insurance, today announced that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has received $3.44 million to settle a dispute with American Insurance Group (AIG), which admitted it had underreported workers’ compensation premiums – and thus, underpaid premium taxes and assessments – over several years
The Division was one of eight states which led the investigation into AIG’s practices; all 50 states and the District of Columbia will benefit from the Regulatory Settlement Agreement (RSA) with the insurer. More Information

DIVISION RELEASES RESULTS OF SPECIAL EXAMINATION ON THE 2011 MASSACHUSETTS TORNADOES
On the afternoon of June 1, 2011, homes, businesses and property in portions of Western and Central Massachusetts suffered catastrophic damage as a result of severe weather conditions including tornadoes. Recently, the Massachusetts Division of Insurance called a special examination of the top 25 home insurance companies and the Massachusetts Property Insurance Underwriting Association (“FAIR Plan”) for the purpose of reviewing and evaluating the processing of claims submitted as a result of the tornadoes. The report documents that of the 11,000+ claims submitted by owners of homes, businesses and vehicles and other property, more than 98% were processed within 120 days of the tornado. Insurance payments to date total nearly $200 million, essential funds which are allowing claimants to rebuild their homes and their lives.

PLAN OF LIQUIDATION FOR EASTERN CASUALTY INSURANCE COMPANY
On May 1, 2012, the Supreme Judicial Court for Suffolk County approved the Plan of Liquidation filed by Joseph G. Murphy, Commissioner of Insurance of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as Trustee of the Eastern Casualty Liquidating Trust, successor to all of the assets and liabilities of Eastern Casualty Insurance Company. The Plan of Liquidation governs future proceedings in the liquidation of the Trust by providing claim determination procedures for the disposition of proofs of claim against Eastern Casualty, providing a claim amendment deadline for perfecting contingent or unliquidated claims, and specifying the applicable priorities of distribution.
