What you need   for Fluoride Varnish Training for Health-Care Professionals

Step 1

Contact the MassHealth Dental Program Outreach Coordinator, Jenna Blanchette, BS, RDH, at Jenna.Blanchette@dentaquest.com or (617) 413-5427 to discuss the fluoride varnish training program.

Step 2

Physicians and qualified personnel, including nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, physician assistants, medical assistants, and community health workers may complete a self-administered web-based training to receive CME credit.  (See “Online” section below.)

MassHealth Training Information

MassHealth offers training to support physicians and qualified personnel to offer fluoride varnish services to MassHealth members younger than 21 years old.  Fluoride varnish is safe, inexpensive, and effective in preventing tooth decay. Offering fluoride varnish as a routine service is one way that primary care teams can help prevent tooth decay and improve the health and well-being of MassHealth members.

We can provide support to practices looking to implement or improve fluoride varnish services. Assistance can be provided with office workflow and MassHealth billing. We offer tools, resources, and sharing of best practices.

Web-based Training

The Smiles for Life, a National Oral Health Program, is endorsed by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. (One CME credit is available through the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) upon completion.) Go to http://www.smilesforlifeoralhealth.org for a web-based training program that includes an online course. (Select Online Course, and then choose the course titled "Caries Risk Assessment, Fluoride Varnish, and Counseling.”) 

  • Participants will need to complete the registration/login process to be able to obtain a CME certificate at the end of the course.
