Building Code Study and Local Floodplain Action Guide

Learn about this collaborative project to promote flood resilience in Massachusetts

Flooding from precipitation and coastal storm events is among the most serious climate hazards facing Massachusetts. In collaboration with EEA, CZM, and DCR’s Flood Hazard Management Program, the Executive Office of Economic Development (EOED) is identifying future opportunities and developing new resources to help communities reduce flood risk and build Massachusetts’s resilience to climate change.

Overview

Together with partners, EOED is making efforts to support flood resilience on two fronts:

  • Building Code Study: EOED is evaluating the Massachusetts state building code for future opportunities to increase climate resilience through flood-resistant construction standards
  • Local Floodplain Action Guide: EOED is creating a guide to assist cities and towns take impactful zoning, administrative, and other local actions to promote flood-smart development

Between October 2023 and June 2024, EOED will hold a series of online engagement sessions to gather input about these topics. Watch a video of a past session here.
